If you have been diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy
or a myopathy, or if this is the case for one of your family
members or close friends, please know that there are sources
of support available. A useful first place to start is the
Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which provides emotional
and informational support. Visit the MDA Local
Offices section of the MDA web site for further information.
Another useful web site for support information is the Genetic
Alliance site. Or, you may find it helpful to contact
your local hospital and ask to speak with a genetic counselor.
She is likely to know, or to be able to find out about support
group information. Also, genetic counselors are available
to discuss genetic-related information about dystrophies and
myopathies, as well as provide emotional support. Visit the
links section to view a more
extensive list of informational and support related web sites.
